Brief Description of the Statue of Balto:
Back in 1925, there was a terrible diphtheria outbreak in the city of Nome, Alaska. There wasn’t enough antitoxin to treat all the sick until teams of sleds and sled dogs braved a dizzying snowstorm to travel 674 miles to deliver the medication.
Balto is a husky, one of the heroic lead dogs.
Later, Frederick Roth created this Balto statue in Central Park in New York to commemorate and thank those sled dogs who bravely stood up in times of human difficulties.
